Percy Barton was born in Burwell on 5th April 1891 (Newmarket Q2-1891 3B:561), the son of William and Alice BARTON (née WEBB).

1901 census...Aged 10, he was at North Street, Burwell with his father William BARTON [50] farm labourer born Herringswell; his mother Alice [47] born Swaffham Prior; brothers Ernest [12], George [7] and Bertie [4]. All the children were born in Burwell.

1911 census...Aged 19, a brick labourer, he was at North Street, Burwell with his parents and brother George (brick labourer) and Bertie (factory labourer).


He enlisted in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada on 14th January 1916, giving his date of birth as 5th April 1891, single, a mechanic from Ingersoll, Ontario. Next of kin, his mother Mrs Alice BARTON of North Street, Burwell, Cambs UK. 5 feet 7 inches (170.2 cm)tall, weighing 154 lbs (70.1 kg), chest 35" to 37" (88.9 to 94 cm), brown eyes, brown hair, Church of England

He embarked on SS "Lapland" at Halifax on 1st November 1916, arriving at Liverpool on 11th November 1916 and was posted to the 39th Battalion at W.Sandling on 5th December 1916 and 6th Reserve Battalion on 4th January 1917 at Shornecliffe Camp.
Arriving at Canadian Base Depot in France on 22st March 1917, he then arrived with the 2nd Battalion in the field on 28th March 1917.
He was killed in Action in the region of Hill 70 near Lens on 21st March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive.
Twelve men of his battalion were killed, all buried together at Aix-Noulette.
